Never Shout Never

Jan. 24th, Downtown Brew, San Luis Obispo

Never Shout Never, the brainchild of 18 year old singer, songwriter and guitarist Christofer Drew invaded San Luis Obispo’s Downtown Brew to showcase songs from his Major Label debut “What Is Love?” which dropped January 26th on Warner Brothers Records. A fever pitch was building outside before the show as the sold out crowd waited in line anticipating Drew’s performance. Once inside, the wide age of fans greeted the band with enthusiasm that bordered on hysteria and sung every song word-for-word along with Drew. Opening the set with the title track “What Is Love?,” Christopher Drew preceded to show his skills as a performer who is able to be personable with the audience while simultaneously displaying star quality. If the reaction to this show was any indication, Never Shout Never certainly can become the voice of this generation.

Never Shout Never’s first exposure came through the internet and MySpace, where Christofer Drew kept online viewers interested by a constant flow of new blogs, photos, and of course music. His MySpace page once averaged over 100,000 plays per day and has racked up over 77 Million total plays. “I was kinda surprised, it happened really fast and it was kinda scary at first.” the singer told us before the show while talking about his early online success.

Through a steady schedule of touring and the release of EP’s, Never Shout Never now seem poised to take the next step to reach the masses through Drew’s unique and introspective music and lyrics. Take one listen to the new CD’s title track “What Is Love?” and you will be instantly infected with its memorable melody which harkens back to a young Bob Dylan, while at the same time having an updated sound to appeal to all generations. “I tried to grow a little bit musically on it. I experimented with a lot of new instruments, a lot of new sounds. I used mostly pre 1970’s equipment and pre 70’s mikes. It sound cool, it’s a little bit different.” Drew told us about the recording of the CD.

Watch for Never Shout Never to continue to tour throughout the year in support of “What Is Love?” with appearances on the AP Tour (Alternative Press) from March-May and all Summer on The Vans Warped Tour.

Interview with Never Shout Never

Christofer Drew

CentralCoastRocks.com: Welcome to San Luis, tonight’s show is sold out and I know Tuesday’s show is sold out. How is the vibe on the tour so far?

Christofer Drew: So far so good. We’re doing a stripped down acoustic kind of vibe and it’s been good. We’ve been able to practice a lot of harmonies and stuff like that. It’s been very focused.

CentralCoastRocks.com: You are not much older than the kids in tonight’s audience, do you think this helps your fans relate to your music?

Christofer Drew: Yeah, definitely. It’s good to hear music from somebody in the same age range, you know, the same life experiences.

CentralCoastRocks.com: You first achieved success on MySpace before issuing the “Yippee! EP in 2008, that same year you were on TRL. Tell us about your online success, was it a calculated move or were you surprised at how everything took off.

Christofer Drew: I just kept putting up new pictures, putting up new songs, just trying to keep everybody interested. I feel like the best way to do it on MySpace is a constant flow of information and putting up new blogs and pictures and new songs. I was kinda surprised, it happened really fast and it was kinda scary at first.

CentralCoastRocks.com: You signed to Warner Brothers Records last year and your first full length record “What Is Love” comes out this Tuesday (Jan. 26th), tell us about the songs on the CD.

Christofer Drew: Well I tried to grow a little bit musically on it. I experimented with a lot of new instruments, a lot of new sounds. I used mostly pre 1970’s equipment and pre 70’s mikes. It sound cool, it’s a little bit different. I tried to not like have another machine album, I feel like all the albums these days are going through the same machine, you know? It’s different, it’s cool.

CentralCoastRocks.com: How was it working with (Producer) Butch Walker? (Avril Lavigne, Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup)

Christofer Drew: It was awesome, he’s the man. He added a lot, he had so many cool ideas. He pretty much let us do whatever we wanted to. He didn’t give us any constraints.

CentralCoastRocks.com: There was a Major-Label bidding war for you, why did you end up picking Warner Brothers Records?

Christofer Drew: I was really skeptical about the Major Label thing because I didn’t want to be just pushed to radio and then that be the end of the career, you know? Because I’ve seen a lot of bands do it, they just do the one hit wonder thing. I just wanted a Label that just made it more of a career, you know? They based everything off like five more records down the line instead of just like the big first album, you know? That way I can just develop naturally and not try to rush anything.

CentralCoastRocks.com: Was there a certain event or personality that influenced you to pursue music?

Christofer Drew: When I first started I started listening to Bob Dylan and The Beatles a lot, my Dad got me into them. I like Bob Dylan a lot, I can relate with him musically and things like that. I try to just make poetry I guess and then put music to it.

CentralCoastRocks.com: What are your plans after this tour and for the rest of the year?

Christofer Drew: We’re playing the AP Tour, it’s really exciting. We’re playing with a four piece string section and a four piece horn section which is going to be really cool. Then after that we’re doing Warped Tour.

CentralCoastRocks.com: Final words for your fans?

Christofer Drew: I Love you, and keep spreading Love.
